Trisomy13 Awareness

Love beyond Measure
Furthering the Awareness of Trisomy-13

Awareness Bracelet
designed and sold by Daena Seland

This beautiful and one of a kind bracelet, made of sterling silver, pearls, and Swarovski crystals was designed with the hopes to increase the awareness of Trisomy-13 and offer families a token of support, remembrance and most of all love.

Trisomy-13, also called Patau Syndrome, occurs when extra DNA from chromosome 13 appears in some or all of the body’s cells. It is a chromosomal anomaly which occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 newborns (stats would be higher if one took into consideration the number of terminated pregnancies). These children can have a multitude of birth defects and/or physical disorders. Trisomy-13 affects each child differently.

Sadly, many of our families are strongly encouraged to terminate their pregnancies when their unborn baby is diagnosed with T-13. They are told their child will not live through the first year of life and that they will suffer from many medical issues. This is not always true! While many of our children do pass away due to complications and/or a lack of aggressive medical treatment, there is not enough known about Trisomy-13 to make this a valid statement. There are several children and adults who have beaten the odds of Trisomy-13 and are SURVIVING!

Within the bracelet, there are 13 crystals to represent chromosome 13. The center crystal is slightly larger to symbolize the “mosaicism” or “translocation” that occurs in some of the children. The simple and delicate colors are meant to represent the purity and angelic nature our children possess. To emphasize the uniqueness of those born with Trisomy-13, the butterfly charm on each bracelet is different. A parent cannot choose who their unborn child is going to be, but they can choose to love and accept them for who they are. Please accept the butterfly you have been given just as you would love and accept the unique gifts each child with Trisomy-13 brings to the world.

“. . .if coal can turn to diamonds and sand can turn to pearls, if a worm can turn into a butterfly, then love can turn the world. . .”**

Please wear your bracelet with pride and joy. Together, we can share our walk with Trisomy-13 around the world. We can do this one bracelet at a time. . .
